Over the weekend I added some new lampwork beads to the shop including some floral focals. Each floral takes me well over two hours and when I had trouble with my eyes last year I pretty much stopped making them. Recently, the sun popped it's head through the clouds and I decided it was time to to try again.
Butterfly beads are the hardest.. It takes a lot of concentration to apply the tiny glass butterfly chip without overheating it and smearing it into a blurry mess. I really have to feel on top of my game to even attempt it so I was really happy with the way this one turned out,
This was another of my favourites, These translucent opal glasses are just so beautiful especially encased in clear. They aren't always easy to work with. they can devitrify, opacify and they don't always play nicely with other colours, but if you hit the sweet spot they have a magical fairytale quality that is worth the trouble.
Last one for today, I just love the colours of this one. Layering glass colour is a bit of a crap shoot, it's not like mixing paint where you know red and blue will make purple. In glass manufacture metals, such as cobalt, are used to colour glass and so when you mix glass colours the metals can react with one another. I always think it's a bit like alchemy.

Sometimes I try a combination of colours I think will work and it looks just plain fugly but sometimes I stumble on something that is greater than the sum of it's parts. This bead was one of those, I have searched for a true royal purple for years to no avail and then suddenly without putting any actual thought into it I had found it, my perfect purple.
